As we grow older, birthdays become less of a party and look more like every other day. We don’t normally get cupcakes at our desk as we once did in 4th grade, and our co-workers don’t as readily sing us “happy birthday” with honest excitement. Years pass us by in a blink of an eye, and we could have sworn we were just at our My Little Pony themed party (…just me?).
One of my girlfriends celebrated a birthday last weekend and was determined to make it just that-a celebration. We decided to replace the party hats for sun hats and Sprite for margaritas, and take a quick weekender trip out of LA to Laguna Beach.
We stayed at the St. Regis Monarch Beach, just south of downtown Laguna, and it was incredible. Between amazing meals full of fresh veggies and crab cakes, we walked on the beach, drank wine and laid by the pool. We chatted about life, about our jobs and what the next 5 years held for each of us with absolutely zero awareness of time. In any big city, it’s easy to get lost in the daily grind; the push to create more, to do more. What’s so wonderful about that kind of inspiration, can also be incredibly exhausting, making it important to step away-if only for a night. So thanks to my girlfriends, who are always down to really celebrate a birthday in style.
