I’m not quite sure what it is, but there has always been something super cozy to me about layering. Maybe it’s my Midwest blood, growing up in Michigan knowing that in one day you could face 3 different climate changes and one must dress accordingly. Or maybe I just like the vision of layering socks over leggings in front of a cozy fireplace, sipping hot cocoa and simply the thought gets me excited. Frankly, who even knows. The fact of the matter is layers are a trend I stand behind.
A little bit like relationships, isn’t it? This layering thing. We’re calm, cool and collected all prepped for whatever climate comes at us up front. Then slowing, either throughout the day or into the next days, we begin peeling back those layers risking exposing more and more skin. Sometimes we lose track of how much we’ve peeled back, easily giving the shirt off of our backs, almost literally, to another human and quickly lose site of ourselves. And sometimes we’re keenly aware, choosing our words with the kind of deep caution the President would take when he’s addressing congress. And then BAM you’re hit smack in the face with a gust of freezing wind, forcing the recovering of some external layers just to keep warm. It doesn’t matter how prepared you are in your layers, you can’t plan for the wind and the climate changes. Not to get overly metaphorical here, but we all do it. Dress ourselves to undress ourselves, finding we have to dress ourselves back up all over again. That’s life. A beautiful, emotional, infinitely layered ride.
So I guess moral of the story, whether you dress in layers for the fashion or the function, and whether you peel back your layers up front or at a controlled rate in your relationships, do it without fear. Never be afraid to expose a little of who you are to others. The sting from a cold gust of wind is inevitable but often times it jolts you forward, awakening things in you that you didn’t even know lay dormant in the first place.
